Balloon Chemistry - Science

Image result for baking soda balloonsAim: To see which chemical
mix creates the most gas.

Hypothesis: (What do I think will happen)
I think that the baking soda and vinegar will create the most gas to fill the balloon more than the other ones. The reason behind this is because I have heard about people using this technique before and been told it works. I haven't heard much about the other ones but I think that they might work.

Materials:
  1.  Balloon
  2.  Bottle
  3.  Yeast
  4.  Warm water
  5.  Sugar
  6.  Funnel
Steps:
  1.  Grab a bottle, make sure it is empty and dry.
  2.  Grab a funnel and balloon.
  3.  Then get the first ingredients, yeast, and sugar.
  4.  Pour 2 tsp of the yeast and 1 tsp of sugar, make sure to pour it one at a time.
  5.  Then wait for it to rise.
  6.  'Next experiments' repeat the first 2 steps, This time grab some baking soda and vinegar. after that use salt and soda.
           My images:

Findings:

Balloon 1
( 3 tsp baking soda, ½ cup vinegar)
Balloon 2
( 3 tsp salt, ½ cup soda)
Balloon 3
( 2 tsp yeast, 1 tsp sugar )
Balloon Size (cm)
10.6cm5.1cm5.5cm
Bubbles
Medium amount of bubblesMedium amount of bubblesA large amount of bubbles.

Conclusion:
The mixture of baking soda and vinegar creates a bugger reaction to each other creating more gas than most other mixes. The mixture of salt and normal soda makes the little amount of gas compared to the baking soda and vinegar. In conclusion, if u want to create more gas I would recommend baking soda and vinegar.

Storyboards Creation

Today for art we created a storyboard to help understand what is going where and how it is gonna look. We did some light scratching and explained the drawing with a brief explanation. When we finished up the drawings we started to give other peoples drawings and explanations feedback while another group was giving us feedback. The feedback we got given was.

Positive - I like the wolf in the story.
Thoughtful - It reminds me of a cold night.
Helpful - Next time tell us about what happened after the wolf chased the girls into the cave.

Hurumanu - Rainbow Paper

Aim: To separate colors by using the process of chromatography.

Definition: Chromatography is a method of separating out materials from a mixture.
Eg. blood, ink, drugs,

Scenario
A crime has been committed. The police have a signed cheque and a letter from the same crime scene but it seems like the handwriting is different. They have 3 suspects but not enough evidence. They need to know if the letter and the cheque were written by the same person.

How do they tell if the pens used for both of these pieces of evidence are the same?

Rainbow paper

Materials;

1. Two felt pens
2. One cup
3. One piece of chromatography paper
4. Some water
5. One Pencil
6. One Ruler

Process:

Step 1: Draw a line one centimeter away from the bottom of the paper.
Step 2: Colour two dots of color on the lines.
Step 3: Fold the paper across the top of the cup so it's almost touching the bottom.
Step 4: Put some water in the cup until it is almost touching the paper.
Step 5: Wait for the color to make a rainbow on the paper.
Step 6: Blog about your learning to share the experience.

Conclusion: What have I learned from this experiment?
For the first activity of the day, we have created a rainbow with water and felts with the help of science. we had a lot of fun creating the beautiful masterpiece. the best thing about it is the fact it takes a tiny amount of time to do. With the help of science, we have created something amazing. I had a great time.

Science

Aim: To learn the names of 10 household chemicals and identify if they are a solid, liquid or a gas.

Definitions:

  1. Element; A single form of a chemical
  2. Compound: A mixture made up of 2 or more elements
  3. Reaction: A process in which chemicals mix together to form a new substance.
  4. Mixture: When two or more elements are mixed together.

Equipment:

  1.  Lemon juice
  2.  Salt
  3.  Sugar
  4.  Vinegar
  5.  Lemonade bubbles
  6.  Onion gas
  7.  Baking soda
  8.  Milk
  9.  Cornflour
  10.  Banana
Steps:

1.  Search the internet for the name.
2.  Find the chemical name.
3.  Find an image.
4.  Find out what type of item it is. (liquid, solid or gas)

Repeat the steps for all the chemicals.

Task 1: Put the 10 chemicals in a chart with the titles - Name, Chemical ingredient(s), Image, Solid/Liquid/Gas.

CONCLUSION: ( WHAT DID YOU LEARN OR SEE)

The chemical name for salt is Sodium Chloride and salt is a type of solid food. The chemical name for lemon juice is citric acid while lemon juice is a type of liquid drink. Sugar has the chemical name sucrose while the food is a type of solid. Vinegar is a type of liquid while the chemical name for it is acetic acid. Lemonade Bubbles is a type of gas that is called carbon dioxide. The name for onion gas is Propanethiol S-oxide and the type of subsistence it is is a gas. The chemical food named Sodium hydrogen carbonate while we call it baking soda. Milk is a type of liquid, milk is also known as Aqueous.
