Fleas and Rats - Chaos!

Basic Body Paragraph - Fleas and Rats

During the black death 75-200 million people, almost one-third of the world’s population causing it to be named the deadliest pandemic in history. The black death started in china and spread wide around the world, mainly getting transported by the trading ports making it harder to contain. During the first year, it hit all of the countries near china and a while after managed to hit Europe. The plague started from the fleas that had the infectious fever caused by the bacterium yersinia pestis. We believe that when the fleas bite these rodents and humans it was helping to spread the disease. This helps link back to my main topic, The black death was the deadliest pandemic in history.

Distillation - Chemistry

Last lesson we learned that the process of evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas. So we can separate a solution, by evaporating away the solvent to leave a solute (Solid). But what if we want to collect gas? when we trap the gas and turn it back into a liquid this is called condensation. Distillation uses the process of condensation.

What is -
Evaporation: Heating a liquid, turns to a gas.
Condensation: Cooling down a gas, turn into a liquid.

Set-Up -

Hypothesis - I think that the water will be evaporated but I don't know what the solid will be.

RESULTS -
As we turned the orange flame to blue the coke zero inside the conical flask heated up very quickly and was boiling in no time, along with the massive bubbles there was also lots of condensation gathering on the glass. attached to the conical flask was the tube thing wich slowly started pumping small amounts of clear liquid into the test tube that was dumped into a beaker full of ice. Coming out of the test tube was a ongoing stream of smoke. During the 20mins the coke zero slowly went down till there was barely any left, the colour was now almost black kinda like soy sauce but a shade darker. When all the water evaporated from the coke what was left was a small puddle of inky black.

Character Design - Melodrama

Today in drama class we were working on creating our own characters. We talked a little about the types of characters and their roles in the play/movie. We got given a few questions to answer then got to create our own character with their traits and what they like to do.

Q1 - Describe 5 types of melodrama characters.

A Hero: They are good, handsome, and manly. They act on there intuition and are in-tune with nature. While they believe in justice, they don't always follow the less important rules of society.

A Heroine: Who is also moral in that they are innocent. They are beautiful and courageous but likely need saving.

A Villian: They are evil. These characters are normally greedy, vengeful, and corrupt.

A Villains Accomplice: They are rather idiotic and serves as comical relief.

A Faithful Servant: They help the hero uncover hidden information on the villain. This character also serves comic relief but does not come off as idiotic.

Q2 - Create a full biography for a melodrama character you have invented.

Mixing and Dissolving - Chemicals and Chaos

Today in chemicals and chaos we were learning about mixtures and the huge vocabulary of words involved with this subject. We had the pre-test to see what we already knew about mixtures and I got 94% out of 100%. After we did the pre-test we learned a little about it and after that, we did an experiment with sugar and water.

What is a mixture?
A mixture is a substance made by combining different substances together.

What is dissolving?
Dissolving something is when you are making the substance part of the mixture.

How could you speed up dissolving?
You could use hot water, Use a fine powder, or stir it in.

Can everything dissolve?
Soluble - Something that can dissolve in water.
Insoluble - Something that can not dissolve in water.

EXPERIMENT -

Equipment -
50ml of cold water + 1 spatula sugar x2
50ml of warm water + 1 spatula sugar x2

Method -
1. Add one spatular of sugar into the cold water and mix until dissolved making sure to time it from when you first put it into when it is finished dissolving.
2. Add one spatular of sugar into the warm water and mix until dissolved making sure to time it from when you first put it into when it is finished dissolving.
3. Add one spatular of sugar into the cold water and leave it making sure it is not disturbed and wait until it is dissolved making sure to time it from when you first put it into when it is fully dissolved.
4. Add one spatular of sugar into the warm water and leave it making sure it is not disturbed and wait until it is dissolved making sure to time it from when you first put it into when it is fully dissolved.

Serial Dilution - Chemistry

AIM:

The aim of this experiments is to create a serial dilution.

HYPOTHESIS:

It will become less consentrated as it goes down the line..

Method:

Start of by collecting 6 test tubes. In the first test-tube, put 10mls of water. With the other 5 test tubes, fill them all up with 5ml of water. After that, start by adding in a piece of potassium permanganate into test tube 1 with the 10mls. Move 5mls of solution 1 into test tube 2 and 2 into 3 until it has ended up with 5 going into 6. By that time you should notice the different shades as the potassium permanganate starts diluting and becomes overcome with the water there for making it a lighter and less concentrated solution as it goes down the line.

Conclusion: The start tube was the most concentrated because it had less water causing it to have more of the potassium permanganate particals. as you went down the line the potassium permanganate started becoming more diluted as the water makes itself more present.

Chicken Tacos!! - Cooking

Today for cooking, we made Crispy Chicken Tacos. The people in my group were Sunny and Jacob for Hayley wasn't here today. It was a Strange and chaotic lesson but my group and I managed to pull together in the end and create some great tacos. In our tacos, we had chicken breast, lettuce, cheese, carrots, sour cream, and salsa.

The Taco was divine, the chicken was very nice for it melted in your mouth. The only thing that troubled me with the chicken was the fact it wasn't as crunchy as I expected so next time I would put it in for longer. The lettuce and carrots were fresh and added some different texture with the crunch making up for the lack of crunch in the chicken. I think I may have added a bit too much sour cream to the tacos for it had an overpowering taste. I think next time I make this I won't add the sour cream for I didn't like the way it blended with the flavors and textures of the taco.

I didn't get any photos for my group, and I didn't have our phones there for making it impossible to get photos of our tacos.

Ingredients:

Tortillas
Salsa
Carrots
Lettuce
Cheese
Sour cream
Chicken breast

Cooking Method:

1. preheat oven to 180

2. Slice chicken into strips 4cm wide. These may be cut into 6cm lengths.

3. Place chicken into a bowl.

4. Drizzle with oil and mix to cover all chicken surfaces.

5. Add crispy chicken spice mix and stir to coat chicken evenly.

6. Place coated chicken on an oven tray lined with baking paper.

7. Bake for 10-12 mins until crispy and golden.

8. warm tortillas in the microwave for 30 sec.

9. Build your taco with chicken, lettuce, carrot, cheese, and top with sour cream and salsa.

Gymnastics - P.E

 Gymnastics -

Today my focus was on the beam. I was working on having the confidence to jump over objects for at the start of this subject I wasn't even able to walk down the beam without falling off. When I started I tried to jump over nothing so I could get the hang of jumping on the beam. After that, I put on 1 cone and started building up the courage to jump over it. In the end, I jumped over the cone 3 times and accomplished some of the things on the card.

My 3 activities from the card was a normal jump, walking up and down the beam, and jumping over cones trying to stay on.

Filtration Experiment - Chemistry

Aim: To separate a solution from a precipitate.

Hypothesis - It doesn't change.

Results:

After filtering it the filtered part was a clear liquid and the part left was a chunky, solid blue, chemical. When we filtrated the mixture I was very surprised by the fact it was clear but then again chemistry is a very complicated subject.

Vegetarian Burgers - Home Economics

Yesterday in home economics we were making open steak burgers but because I can't eat some meats two others and I made some vegetarian burgers. Instead of having the steak, we had hashbrowns, which in my opinion is much better than any meat. We used the normal buns from the supermarket instead of the fancy once you would buy at the bakery. We were given a lot of choices to personalise our burgers not only in taste but with the appearance too. One of the choices was if we wanted to post our buns but I chose against it for I like the chewiness of the bun. My burger had lettuce on both the top and bottom bun so the wet ingredients don't make the buns soggy. I also had tomatoes, some onion, and of course, one hashbrown in the middle of it all.

INGREDIENTS -

Hashbrowns or steak
1 Tablespoon Oil - optional
Tomatoes - optional
An Onion- optional
1 Leaf of Lettuce - optional
Cheese - optional
Beetroot - optional
Sauce:
BBQ
Tomato
Mayonnaise
- optional

METHOD -

1. Collect your chosen ingredients.
2. Steak - Cut into thin strips and add into a pan with 1 tablespoon oil.
Hashbrown - Use directions on the box.
3. Prep your ingredients to put on your burger.
4. once your steak/hashbrown is done then start adding your ingredients onto the buns.
5. Enjoy your beautiful burgers!

HOW DID IT TASTE?

The chewiness of the buns contrasted with the crunchiness of the lettuce, onion, and the hashbrown giving it more texture. The tomato had this sweet but sour taste contrasting with everything else. I added the mayonnaise and barbeque sauce and I think I made the right choice. The barbeque gave the burger a smokey type of flavour whereas the mayonnaise had this rich and sweet flavour profile. Though there were a lot of contrasting flavours I thought that they all brought the burger together giving it an amazing and unique flavour.

Masks - Drama

Commedia Dell-Arte Masks - Commedia dell'arte masks are one of the most important parts of each character. Each mask design is paired with a specific character based on appearance and tradition. Commedia masks make a statement to the audience from the moment they are seen on stage.

Greek Masks - They are the Comedy and Tragedy masks that were worn in ancient Greece in the golden age, around 500 – 300 BC. They are paired together to show the two extremes of the human psyche. All of the actors were male, and they all played multiple roles, so a mask was used to show the change in character or mood.

Masquerade Masks - masquerade ball is an event in which many people come in costume wearing a mask. Less formal "costume parties" may be a descendant of this tradition. A masquerade ball usually encompasses music and dancing.

Mask Performance -

I think that the performance was great. I liked the way all of the masks turned out but I think that next performance I could do better acting for I don't think that I was at my best. One thing I need to remember for next time is to probably not leap as far as I can of the stage for I could tumble over.

9/11 - Timeline

Today in chemicals and chaos we all had gotten to do some individual work and choose which assignment we wanted to do. I chose to work on 9/11 because, to be honest, I have never heard of it. I did a lot of research about it and learned a lot about some countries. My task was to make a timeline following the events that lead up to the crash of flight 11 and flight 175. Here is my timeline.

6:00am - Polling station opens
7:59am - Flight boards 11 crew members, 76 passengers, 5 highjackers
8:15am - The flight takes off from Boston to Los Angeles
8:19am - Flight crew informs ground personal about highjackers.
8:46am - Flight 11 crashes into floors 93-99 of the north tower
9:00am - Flight attendant aboard flight 175 alerts air traffic control that a highjacking is underway
9:03am - FLight 175 crashes into floors 77-85 of the south tower.

Reflection - 2 Week Holiday!

Because it was the end of the term we got to have a 2 week holiday. Mine started off with a trip up to Kaikoura to see my grandad and his wife. We also had made a stop to see my Great, Great aunty Barbra and Grea, Great uncle Bill. During the car ride there we made a few stops to different cafes to get drinks, food, and to make some bathroom stops. We had some car karaoke and we were more on the side of screaming the lyrics rather than singing them. When we reached the house we all caught up for we didn't have much time on the car ride.

The next day I decided to make them chocolate chip waffles with bacon and fruits. Once we were all finished eating we went out to the town and went shopping for new things. I brought a necklace for $10 and totally worth it. I haven't taken it off since. After that, we went to see Barbra and Bill because they are getting very old and may not be there next time we visit.

At the end of the night, we went to that bar/restaurant lobster and ordered our food. It took 2 hours for my family to get their food. and 3 for mine to arrive. Mine was the first ordered and all I had was fish and chips while everyone else had ribs and steak. The plus side of it was they gave me a free coke so it was fine in the end.

On the last day, we said our goodbyes and left for our trip back home after dropping off my aunty at the airport. Best, Trip Ever.

B&E - Market day

For the past few weeks, we have been working on making our own businesses. We started off by learning a little about how people started their businesses and some more about how to keep to our budgets. We had to get into groups of 4 and assign our roles.

My group consisted of Makenzie as the Finance Manager, Kahcair as the Marketing Manager, Lucy as the CEO, and me as the Production Manager. Our business was a success for we sold our's very quickly and had some people complementing our sherbert. We made around $40 profit for we had a $20 budget. 2 of the things I had learned were that sherbert was very easy to make or mess up. The other thing that I learned was that make boxes out of paper were very easy once you get the hand of it.

Because my group was very indecisive we had changed our product many times causing us to have very little time to get the prices and prepare for the market day. We had a lot of trouble with time management because we were very slow with our jobs causing us to have to do a lot of things last minute. Next time I would definitely try to figure out our product quicker and try to keep to the budget better.

My highlight of the day was when my group sold out and we could all wander around together and look at everything everyone else had made. It was very interesting with the different ideas that people had but that is what made the market day better.

Muffin Testing - Cooking

Today in Home Economics, we made Mini Apple Sauce Muffins. It didn't take to long but it wasn't the fastest we could have been. Our lesson was a little different because each group's recipe was different from everyone else's, so our muffins all had different tastes and textures. Each group got to taste each other's muffins and have our opinion. I didn't try any of the muffins because I had to leave before I could eat them but I did get my group's opinions.

The Opinions:

Group 1: Original muffins - It was okay. It wasn't their favorite but they thought it still had a good taste.

Group 2: Butter & Wholemeal flour - It was okay. It was a little too soft kind of like it was undercooked.

My groups: Butter & Soy -  My group thought the muffins were okay. They thought the muffins could have been better if it had more flavor or sweetness. They also were undercooked making them not have the best texture.

Group 4: Canola & Wholemeal flour - It was okay. It was rough on the outside but the texture was soft on the inside. The muffins were nice.

Ingredients:

1 c Apple sauce

2 T Butter, melted & slightly cooled, or canola, a neutral oil

1 Egg, lightly beaten

1/2 c milk or soy milk

1 t vanilla essence

1 c wholemeal flour or white flour

1/2 c rolled oats

1/4 c sugar

1 t baking powder

1/2 t baking soda

1 t cinnamon

Cooking Method:

1. preheat oven to 180°C and grease mini muffin tins or line with paper cases.

2. In a small bowl, use a fork to whisk together the apple sauce, melted butter, milk, egg, and vanilla (liquid ingredients)

3. Add liquid ingredients to the flour, oats, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and sugar - gently fold together.

4. Fill the muffin tins/paper cases (mini ones) to 3/4 full.

5. Bake about 10 minutes or until cooked.

6. Remove from oven. Let cool for 2 minutes before removing from muffin tins.

Spaghetti Bolognese - Cooking

A few weeks ago for cooking, we had made some Spaghetti Bolognese. Our Spaghetti Bolognese had carrots, spaghetti, tomatoes, Mushroom, cheese, and more. Photography - Tiny Soldiers

What do you see in the photograph?

A soft focus on the bark and the main part is the soldier.

Is your photograph in black and white or color?

Colour.

How have you used focal points and leading lines?

Nope.

What was your initial reaction to the photograph?

It looked bad.

Does the photograph include subject matter you don’t want?

The fence.

Do your figures stand-out from their surroundings or are they hidden?

Stand out.

Do you use symmetry or asymmetry? Have you used the Rule of Thirds?

None.

Does your photography appear to be a real scene?

Because of the fact that the camera is level with the soldier, it makes it seem like a P.O.V of someone with or against them.

What were your i-pad camera settings?

Normal.

If you do have an unwanted subject matter, how would you change the next reshoot?

Blur out the background to make it focus more on the soldier.

What is the direction of the light? Is the light strong or soft? Do you have cast shadows?

The light is coming from the back and making the soldier glow.

Is there a shallow or deep space represented? s your camera angle low or high?

It is eye level with the soldier.

Does the photograph express an idea? Explain

Nope.

Do you use close-ups or distant views?

It is kind of mid-range.

Apple Crumble - Cooking

This week we made some delicious apple crumble. My team had 5 people for there were too many in the class to have groups of 4. Although the topping could have been better if it had browned in the oven for longer. Overall my team worked really well and the food tasted amazing. My group split the responsibility evenly and we got everything done on time. Would definitely make it again!

INGREDIENTS -

1/2 cup of flour,
1/2 a tsp of cinnamon,
1/2 cup of brown sugar,
75g of cold butter, 3/4 of rolled oats,
2-3 medium-sized apples,
1 dessert spoon of white sugar,
1 Tbsp of water.

*Preheat the oven to 180 on fan bake.
1. put the flour, cinnamon, and brown sugar into a medium bowl.
2. Rub the butter lightly into the flour using the tips of the fingers.
3. Add rolled oats and mix with a fork.
4. Peel and quarter the apples. Cut the core out and slice each quarter into thin slices.
5. Divided evenly and place into 2 greased pie dishes.
6. Sprinkle with white sugar and water.
7. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until edges are going brown.

Mac And Cheese - Cooking

A few weeks ago in class, we made some Mac and Cheese. My group and I shared the workaround equally and all understood the process but we still had a few hiccups. I had a fun time making this and it is super easy as well as a great tasting dish to make. The pasta was a little overdone giving it a mushy feeling but it still worked well with the sauce. We had a few problems with the sauce but once we had started to get on track we went head first and completed everything else with no other mistakes. The flavor of the Mac and Cheese was very pronounced for it had quite a bit of cheese. The texture was a bit off but overall a lovely meal. I Don't have the recipe so I'm sorry about that.

Particles and Diffusion - Chemistry

Today in Chemistry, we are learning about Particle Theory and Diffusion. Particles are apart of our everyday life for particles are what makes everything. All of the particles are put into 3 groups of matter, Solid, Liquid, and Gas. Particles in each state of matter move differently and give matter a different property's. Diffusion is were you are mixing the particles of say a solid and a liquid so they move from a high concentration to a low concentration.

Are there different types of matter? - Quora

AIM: To investigate the effect of temperature on rate of diffusion.

Hypothesis - I think that the warm water will diffuse faster than colder because hot water is easier to devolve things with.

Method -

Dish 1 has cold water
Dish 2 has warm water

We put the same amount of Potassium Peregrinate in each of them.

Conclusion -

The warm water spread faster than the cold when they went in. This happened because the hot water had more energy than the cold water making the particles move faster than the colder ones. It is like how when you put hot chocolate powder in your warm water and it dissolves vs when you put it in the cold water and you have to mix it thoroughly before it dissolves completely.

Photo Montage - Art

During my time in photography class, I have learned more about the history of photomontage and a little about Hannah Hoch. I learned about the different types of filters and some about the work behind the scenes of making the photos but mostly about how Hannah Hoch made her collages. She was very famous for some of her pieces but because she was a female they thought she shouldn't be able to create art. After we learned more about Hannah Hoch, we started to collect different free licensed photos and pasted them into google drawings to keep them safe. Afterwards we removed the backgrounds on the photos using remove.bg. Once we had collected and removed the background of them all we started to put them together making a collage of the photos. I found that this part was the hardest for I had no clue how to start it of. Once I had started though it became easier to create and form the collage.

VEGETARIAN NACHOS - Cooking

Yesterday in cooking class we made some vegetarian nachos. My group and I shared the workaround equally and all understood what to do making the prosses easier to do. I had a fun time making this and it is super easy as well as a great tasting dish to make for your friends and family. The chips gave the dish some texture while the beans gave it the feeling of eating meat which made it even better. The vegetables gave to food some color as well as a variety of flavors. Overall, a great and easy dish to enjoy for dinner.

INGREDIENTS -

2-4 mushrooms.
1 grated carrot.
half of an onion.
1/2 a can of chili beans.
1/2 a can of tomatoes.
A handful of nacho chips.
Sprinkle of cheese.
Sour cream/ optional.

The Melodramatic Acting Style - Drama

The Melodramatic Acting Style

  • Remember in Victorian Melodrama, all emotion is externalized. There is no such thing as inner psychological depth!
  • Generally, this means “Over the Topin every way. Here are some techniques which help create this effect.
  • Slower, clearer delivery of lines with huge projection. Remember Victorian Theatres were huge and there were no microphones.
  • Play everything to the audience, even if you are supposed to be talking to another character on stage! Indicate whom you are talking to by looking sideways at them and holding your hand out towards
  • Address the audience directly whenever the script will allow you to do so.

  • The Pose: Invent poses of shock, horror, love, evil, intent, cruelty, desire, dilemma, forgiveness, begging forgiveness, etc. A pose should last at least three seconds and should be clearly visible from fifty meters.
  • The working yourself up to the pose: lasts two to three seconds
  • Be very big and dramatic with your pose making sure to be over the top.

  • The Gasp - very loud expressing a range of emotions. Often accompanied by a pose.
  • The Swoon - often preceded by lines such as "Alas! I can hardly bear it." The swoon should be graceful and provision should be made for someone to catch you.

  • The long walk downstage/upstage/across the stage when hatching a plan or in a dilemma
  • The Pacing- to and fro across the stage when hatching a plan or in a dilemma. Move before you speak so that the audience can track who is speaking
  • The Tableau (freeze frame)- the still picture made up of a number of characters to freeze the moment, eg: The Happy Ending/ The Secret Lovers. Tableaux should be very explicit

  • The Sigh/The Groan/The Tubercular Cough
  • First Entrances are important - may even bow, this is related to the cult of “The Actorthe Star system

CHICKEN STIR FRY - Cooking

On Tuesday for cooking, we were making chicken stir fry. My group and I worked well together but like every group, we had some disagreements and arguments. The cooking was easy and tasted great. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the sauces added a great flavor. The vegetables added some texture as well as some different colors. The noodles made it look bigger and filled my hunger faster. Overall great tasting and easy making recipe.

CHICKEN STIR FRY -

2 pieces of chicken
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
2 tablespoons of honey
2 tablespoons sesame sauce
Any vegetable
2-minute noodles

Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.
Saute the onions.
Add the chicken and cook until lightly browned
Add the vegetables and sauce.

cook for 5-6 minutes or until vegetables are cooked.
