This term we have been learning about color, texture, and flavor. This is demonstrated when we made our TikTok wraps. The lettuce was the most vibrant color making it very prominent and giving the wrap a different look overall. When we made a cheese mixture from cheese, cream cheese, and carrots, the carrot orange color didn't really come out for it was mostly covered by the cheeses. This is important because without the colors it wouldn't look appetising and if something isn't looking nice then you won't want to eat it.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Sustained Silent Reading
26.03.21 - At The Student Poetry Reading
Type - Poem
Creator - Kim Stafford
Critical Literacy Question - How does this text depict age, gender, and/or culture groups?
This text is about how students talk about how they feel in poems but they are all about their flats and what they don't like about themselves. It is about how everyone has their flats but in the last line, it is talking about how they are beautiful and amazing no matter what they think cause they just have to come out of their shell and get some self-confidence. This is not only talking about students that go up and share the information but everyone, even those that don't have the courage to share their feelings and thoughts.
17.03.21 - Sleep Tips for Teenagers
Type - Article
Creator - NHS.uk/
Critical Literacy Question - Why are we reading this text?
The meaning of the text is so that people are able to find some great ways to help people fall asleep during the night. It has tips like 'limiting screen time' and 'Don't binge eat before bedtime' letting people know how to help themselves or their teens get a good night's rest. The reasoning for people to not binge before going to be is because it can cause discomfort during the night causing them to be tense and not relaxed enough to fall asleep. We are reading this because it has been known that teens have been getting less sleep throughout time and articles like these help everyone figure out how to get a good sleep for nights to come.

11.02.21 - Back To Black
This is about the immense power of failure.
It is about how you can learn from your failures and mistakes big or small. It's about how you can use resilience and achieve the goals your couldn't on the first try. It is about persisting through the tuff spaces. "I got sick and tired of trying to impress lots of people. And when I lost lots of my enjoyment, I sort of lost my way". Akira Ioane was hoping for a place in 2019 All Blacks World Cup Team but he missed out after a public roasting from coach Steve Hansen. The real change started happening during lockdown when he was able to focus on himself without anyone pushing and worrying about him all the time. He was able to become a better version of himself with the help of his friends and family.

Film Aspects Meaning - 'The Power Of One'
How do the film aspects show the meaning in John. G. Auildsen's film "The Power Of One".
S: In the concert scene, we hear the native South Africans sing a song in their language that was written by P.K (The main character)
E: The joyful song was lead by a native singer and the chorus was sung by the rest of the tribe harmoniously, whilst Doc played the piano and P.K composed.
X: The song makes us as the audience feel hopeful and it was moving. This was because P.K - though the singing - brought the tribes together.
X: The purpose of this was to help show that P.K was the mythical figure of the Rain-maker;
X: The singing combined with long shots that also helps show the harmony of the natives as they are all sitting nicely together.
Y: The singing can be compared to the singing at the boxing match, as the now freed natives sing to P.K to show him they think he is the Rain-maker. Both lots of singing give a sense of hope for the native South Africans.

The Beatles was released in July 1965 and was the number one for 3 weeks in the US and UK. It was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Lennon recounted "The whole Beatle thing was just beyond comprehension. I was subconsciously crying out for help." during an interview with playboy. Parihaka - Tim Finn and The Herbs
This song tells the story of the peaceful protest. Finn was given Dick Scott's 'Ask That Mountain' by his sister and was told to write a song about it. 'rise up, rise up, defend yourself' was a line that talks about how they were protesting peacefully and still the others retaliated violently. They were determined to set a better future that will be sustainable. The song is significant because it tells us not only the story of the men but the woman and children as well.
