Investigating Light - Making Waves

In science today we were working on learning about light energy and how fast light travels. We had to learn about the differences between Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque. Here is my work.

  1. Window - Transparent

Making Waves - Marshmallow Catapults

Definitions of scientific methods.
A.I.M - What you want to find out.

Hypothesis: An educated method guess.

Equipment/method: Material used for the experiment.

Conclusion: What you research and what you find out.

Steps: The order in which you carry out the experiment.

Findings: What you found out. ( not your friend )


EXPERIMENT

Hypothesis:

I don't think that it will shoot far at all.

Equipment:
  1. 1 clean cup
  2. 1 balloon
  3. 1 pair of scissors
  4. 1 marshmallow
Method:

  1. Cut the bottom off the cup with the scissors.
  2. Tie a knot at the neck of the balloon and snip off the tip.
  3. Stretch the balloon over the top of the cup. You may find this a bit tricky to start with, but after making a few it becomes easy.
  4. Pop your marshmallow into the cup.
  5. Fire the missile by pulling the knotted neck of the balloon and letting go. You will be surprised at how far it can travel2
  6. The open end will fold together when you stretch the balloon, but this will not stop the missile from firing.
Findings:

Our marshmallow catapult was able to shoot up to 11 of my feet when Tennessee shot it over the desk. When the elastic balloon was pulled back it stretched very far and the further the balloon went the more likely the marshmallow would go further.

Climate Chaos - Solar Energy

Today we were talking about how much better solar energy is compared to coal, oil, and natural gases with how long they will be here and how easy they are to get. we started off today by writing down some notes and trying to work them into the same paragraph that our teacher had us take the notes from. Here is mine, Solar power is the most abundant sauce of energy on earth. There is enough solar energy hitting the earth every hour to get one year worth of energy. All oil, coal, and natural gases could be left in the ground if only we could capture 1 hour of energy each year.

Then we had to compear what better between solar and coal. We had it done on a table so we could have the results recorded easier and to make it more understandable. Mostly solar energy is better than coal because it is healthier and better for the envirenment.

Climate Chaos - Solar Power

Aim: To learn about how solar energy is used.

Hypothesis -
I think that black would attract the most heat rather than white or silver.

Materials -
  1. White cup x 2
  2. Clear cup
  3. Black plastic
  4. Tinfoil 
  5. Paper
  6. Water
  7. Thermometer
  8. Heat lamp
Steps -
  1. Grab all of your equipment from your teacher.
  2. Keep one of the white cups on the side because that will be your white color for this experiment.
  3. Mold some tinfoil onto the other while cup to create your silver cup.
  4. Cut along the top of your plastic bag so both ends are open and fit around your clear cup.
  5. Pour some water in each cup making sure it is around 1/4 full.
  6. Turn on your heat lamp making it face all of the cups so the experiment has the correct results.
  7. Test your water in each cup every 15 minutes for about 45 minutes making sure to leave the thermometer out long enough to get the right temperature in each cup.
