The color that pops out the most is this yellowish-white color making the place look cold.
It makes that space feel tired and lonely.

Effect on the viewer (Think/feel):

Boring, Dull, Depressing.
We understand from the picture that they aren't the happiest of families.
Coraline looks like she doesn't like it there.

Directors Purpose:

They made the place seem dull so the other world looks more appealing.
Coraline doesn't like the real world.

Other techniques (Setting):
Outside the window that setting makes the place seem duller.

Other Techniques (Costumes):

Bright Black, red, white.

SEXXXY Paragraph -

In the real world kitchen scene, lighting and color are used effectively to show looks can be deceiving. We see this when Coraline and her real parents are eating in the kitchen. The room is naturally lit from the cloudy window making the room feel dull and uninviting. The color in the room is grey and this yellowish-white. It is used effectively in this perspective for Coraline sees this place more as a place to stay instead of a welcoming and loving home. This makes the audience feel like Coraline doesn't really want to be where she is. The director did this to show how Coraline feels in the real world compared to the otherworld because in the other world the colors have a light and warm tone whereas the real world has a cold and dark tone.

In this scene with the Other Mother and Coraline, The lighting and coloring are used effectively to show the theme looks can be deceiving. We see this when Coraline is walking through the door of the other kitchen for the first time, seeing the warm tone of colors, as well as the dull lighting making the place, feel homey and safe. This makes the audience think that the other world is the better home for Coraline because of the warm colors. The director did this to make a contrasted to later on in the movie where the other world looks less safe with the cooler colors like blues and the dark tones that overshadow the other world.

ANZAC BISCUITS - Cooking

Today in cooking we got split into groups and got given different recipes and types of baking goods. My group consisted of Dominique, Kahciar, and Brayden while we made some delicious ANZAC Biscuits. we could have worked better together but in the end, we got the jobs done and our food made.

ANZAC BISCUITS

1/2 cup standard plain flour
1/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup coconut
3/4 cup rolled oats
50g butter
1 tablespoon golden syrup
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoon  boiling water

Pre-heat your oven on 180 bake. Mix together the flour, sugar, coconut, and rolled oats. Melt the butter and golden syrup together in a small bowl. Dissolve the baking soda in the boiling water and add it to butter and golden syrup. Fold the butter mixture into the dry ingredients until it is combined. Roll the mix into medium-sized balls and fit them on a lined tray 4x3. place them in the oven for about 12-15 minutes or until it turns a golden brown color.

TASTE EVALUATION -
They had a nice crunchy outside while the inside was soft and chewy. The outside had this sugary coating while the inside had this chewy mix between a sweet coconut and the bitterness of the rolled oats. Overall it tasted amazing and had a great texture. When they cooled down they still have around the same taste but the biscuits were cruncher and colder. They still have an amazing sugary coating and chewy inside. Best ANZAC Biscuit ever!

Stage Properties - Drama

Yesterday we were learning about how we can use limited and random props to make a scene. We started by choosing one prop per person in our group and then developed a scene that could justify the use of each of the props that we had chosen. we had to learn about what prop is what and the difference between the props.

What is a stage prop?
A stage prop, formally known as theatrical property, is an object used on stage or screen by actors during a performance or screen production. In practical terms, a prop is something that is portable of movable on the stage of set, distinct from the actors, scenery, costumes, and electrical equipment. consumable food items appearing in the production are also considered a prop.

What is a prop weapon?
A prop weapon, such as a gun or sword, looks like it is real and working but is normally made from plastic/rubber or is the real thing just with a whole bunch of safety features to help keep everyone in the production safe from harm's way.

What is a stunt prop?
A stunt prop is like what it says, it is a prop that is made specifically made to break under a slight point o pressure or something that is easy to smash just to make things look weak and vulnerable compared to the person who thew/sat on the breakable object.

What is a hero prop?
A hero prop is a prop that has a lot of detail so the camera/the audience can see all of the little details and things. The hero prop could have some writing or some movable part that they want the people watching to see.

Heart Dissection - Biology

Yesterday in Biology we talked about the heart and what it does as well as dissecting a pig's heart. We started off by talking about the things the heart does to keep you alive. The heart basically pumps the blood around the body to try and deliver the entry and nutrients to the right cells. Your heart pumps to keep the blood pumping and flowing for if it didn't then your blood would be still and you wouldn't be able to get the oxygen and nutrients to the right cells. When your blood pumps it goes around to the lungs to collect the oxygen while making its way around to get the nutrients from the digestive system to send them down to the different cells that need them. The right side of your heart receives oxygen-poor blood from your veins and pumps it to your lungs, where it collects the oxygen and replaces it with the unwanted carbon-dioxide. The left side of your heart receives oxygen-rich blood from your lungs and pumps it through the arteries to the rest of your body.

When we were dissecting the heart we started by using the scalpel and cutting the left side gently being careful not to cut ourselves. The left side was the thickest side of the heart for it has a lot more muscle. The left side of the heart is thickest for it has to push the blood out more forcefully because it has further to go but it also has to defy gravity when it travels up your body. Then we cut the right side of the heart and found it to be the thinnest side of the heart. The right side was thinner because it had less muscle surrounding it. The right side pumps the blood the lungs which are right next to it which makes it pump the blood with less force then they do with the left. After that, we split it straight down the middle and started playing around with it while learning more about how it works.

Workshop 2: Linking themes to the impact of Angles, Movement, and Shots

BrainStorm -

What is happening:
The other Wybie is standing outside the pink palace on the stairs. The other mother asks him to smile at Coraline from the doorway but he ends up frowning. O.Wybie is making himself smaller - less of a target - kinda like he is submitting by putting his head down, shoulder hunched. looks weak and vulnerable.

Angle Shots:
High Angle - Makes Wybie look over powdered and like he isn't as strong or good as anyone else.
P.O.V - The other mother makes herself seem like she is stronger, bigger, and more dominant.

Viewer:
It makes the viewers feel sorry for/scared for The other wybie for he looks scared and weak.

Director:
Foreshadowing - hinting at whats is to come.
Hinting the maybe the other mother isn't so wonderful like she seems.

Other Techniques:
Lighting - Dark with a spotlight in wybie like he is on the spot/under focus.
the darkness creates a creepy atmosphere.

SEXXXY Paragraph -

In the scene with The Other Mother and The Other Wybie, we see high angle shots used to show the theme looks can be deceiving. We see this when The Other Mother asks The Other Wybie to smile but he hunches over and frowns instead. This makes the audience feel sorry for and scared for The Other Wybie because he looks scared and worried himself. The use of a high angle shot from the perspective of The Other Mother adds to the feeling as it makes The Other Wybie look weak and vulnerable. The director did this to portray foreshadow the change of The Other Mother from being perfect to evil. Coinciding with this is the use of lighting. A spotlight is put ver The Other Wybie and emphasizing that he was under the focus and pressure of The Other Mother. This reminds us of earlier in the film where a low angle shot was used to make Wybie seem big and scary but really he was just an ordinary nerd. This links to the scene because it also shows a moment when the look of a character was deceiving.

Theme Guide Booklet - Film Sudies

Today in film studies we had to choose between making a theme guide booklet or a mindmap about the movie Coraline. My friend and I decided that it would be better for us to do the theme guide booklet because it was an easy task for two people to do together. I talked about how looks could be deceiving like how we first met the other mother and she was so nice compared to at the end of the movie where she turns into a weird looking spider demon. Lucy wrote about the bravery from Coraline in the movie. She was scared at the start of the movie but her character developed in the movie and she became braver and stronger mentally and physically. Here is our theme guide booklet.

Arthritis - Inside And Out

For the past two days, my friend and I have been working on a slideshow about arthritis. We talked about what it was, the different types, and how to prevent arthritis. We did a lot of research and found out a lot of things we didn't know until today. I found out that arthritis isn't caused by clicking your bones unless you bend them too far and mess with the ligaments and cartilage by your bone. Lucy and I halved the work but we also communicated about what we were putting in the slide so we can learn more and compare our information. I found this assignment easy and fun to do which was a surprise for I am not a huge fan of biology.

Unpacking Themes And Ideas - Film Studies

Today for film studies, we were working on the difference between the first impressions and who the character is/what the place is vs who/what the subject actually is.

Theme & Ideas - Continuous idea/subject that links throughout the film/book/show.
'Looks can be deceiving' -
- Don't judge a book by it's cover
- Don't judge by appearance

EXAMPLE 1: Character Of Wybie - When we first meet him he seems scary (Mask, Motorbike, Lightning, Higher point of view, Looks bigger, Loud music) but in reality, he is just her weird neighbor.

HOW DOES IT SHOW THE THEME - Shows theme because, like other characters, our first impressions based on appearance, tone, and visual technics aren't always correct. We used Coraline as an example

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW ABOUT 'LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING' - It is important because it helps the abundance understand with Coraline that just because something looks good doesn't mean it is. She chose the real world over the fake world that turned out to be a trap.

EXAMPLE 2: Character Of the 'Other Mother' - She seems normal/friendly the start but by the end becomes a soal devouring spider demon.

HOW DOES IT SHOW THE THEME - Shows theme because, like other characters, our first impression of the 'Other Mother' is based on appearance, tone, and visual technics that aren't always correct. She seems nice at the start but really isn't so we shouldn't judge by first impressions.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW ABOUT 'LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING' - It is important because Coraline realizes that having something that looks perfect isn't always a good thing.

S - Statement:
In Coraline, the theme 'looks can be deceiving' is used effectively to engage the audience.
E - Evidence:
For instance, the character of the 'Other Mother' shows us that looks can be deceiving because she started of as a caring, kind, mother figure but gradually changes into a soal devouring spider demon.
X -  eXplanation:
Audience -
This makes us understand to not judge everything by appearances but also look for other clues of hints as to who they are for the first appearance can be wrong.
X - eXplanation:
Director -
This was done to help Coraline decide between the real world and the other world. If the 'Other Mother' was really perfect Coraline wouldn't choose to go back home to the real world.
X - eXplanation:
Another technique -
Combined with this is the use of this is the color and lighting. The 'Other Mother' first appearance in a vibrantly bright room that makes us feel warm and safe. However, by the end, it has become dark and green which makes the viewer feel unsafe and shows that looks were deceiving.
Y - Your link -
This can be juxtaposed to the character of Wybie who we think at first is evil but is truly kind proving looks can be deceiving.

Cup Stacking - P.E

Today in P.E, we were working on our cup stacking skills using the speed stack equipment. We started off by stacking the cups 3 by 3 by 3 where you have 3 pyramids next to each other that are made out of 3 cups for each on. I found this on the easiest for we only have to move the cups like a clock and take them down the same way. Next, we learned how to stack the cups 3 by 6 by 3 where you have 2 3 cupped pyramids on each side and a 6 stacked pyramid in the middle. I started off by working on mastering the 6 stacked pyramid and found myself slowly getting faster. After I got the hang of it I grabbed the two stacks of 3 and started doing it all together. I started on my left side and stacked the 3 cups then the 6 and afterward the other 3. Once they were all stacked I went back to the start and took them down. I found this exercise fun because you can compete with your class or friends for the fastest time.

Chewy Choco Chips Cookies - Cooking

Last Friday in cooking class we made some delicious chocolate chip cookies. I would totally recommend this recipe for these are some of the best cookies I have ever made. When made right it has a chewy texture on the inside but crunchy on the out. It becomes cruncher when left our for a little so if you like a chewy and soft cookie then I would recommend you eat them after cooling for a little so they are warm but not so that it burns you when you eat them.

INGREDIENTS

100g butter softened,
1/2 cup of white sugar,
1/2 cup of brown sugar,
1 egg,
1 tsp vanilla,
1 1/2 cups flour,
pinch of salt,
1/2 tsp of baking powder,
1/2 cup choco chips

DIRECTIONS - MADE SIMPLE

We started off by turning our oven to 180 on bake. We then got our mise en place done (Finished getting our ingredients and putting them in order). After that, we softened our butter and added the sugars as well as the vanilla. Once that was creamed together, we added our egg and whipped it until it was incorporated into the mixture. When the wet ingredients were together we mixed all of our dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, and chocolate chips) into a separate bowl to make sure everything would be incorporated at the same time. After that, we mixed the dry ingredients into the wet mixture making sure nit to River mix because that would activate the gluten. When we mixed it we got a tray and lined it with baking paper so the cookies don't stick to the tray. We rolled the cookies into medium-sized balls and placed them down so they don't touch when they spread out while cooking. Then you put them into the oven on the top shelf and cook for about 8 - 10 minutes.

Dance In Musicals - Drama

Today in drama we have been talking about musicals and how the people dance while they sing. We watched the musical Annie where it shows the dance when they sing about them having a 'hard not life'. We also watched a scene where they were dance fighting on the streets and it told the story about how there are different sides and they don't get along. It tells us a bit about each group but also how they would react to things happening to them. We talked about how the dance scenes told us the story or what caused these people to act the way they do. Here is an example of a story in a dance/singing scene from Bugsy Malone - Fat Sam's Grand Slam.

How Does Your Hand Work - Inside Out

For the past two weeks, we have been looking at bones and muscles in our bodies but we have been recently been looking at how our hand functions. In your hand, you have 27 bones keeping it in place as well as 20 joints to help bend your hand in ways to help us with everyday activities. With the muscles in our hand, we have them in our palm and forearm but our fingers don't have any. You have two types of joints in your hand, the first one is a hinge joint which is a joint that can only move one way like how your fingers can only for forwards, the second is a ball and socket joint which is the joint that can move around in a circle.

We made some hands of our own out of paper, reusable straws, and string. We cut the paper into a hand shape and stuck that straws to it. We cut three pieces for the fingers but two for the thumb, then we cut 5 medium-sized ones to connect the fingers to the hand. After that, we cut a small part of the straw to connect all of them together. Once we were done with the base we used 5 thin strips of string and put them through the straw.
